Happy new year everyone!
So, this happened to be my first new year alone and I feel like sharing how it went.
First of, I had always travelled to see my family every festive season, but this time around, I had a huge load of work I was to deliver and so, I couldn't travel.
On Christmas day last week, I ate out and didn't really feel the pain as much as I did when I decided I was going to cook myself a sumptuous meal for the new year.
My problems started yesterday when I went to get foodstuffs and ingredients I was to use in preparing the food I was supposed to eat.
When I asked for prices of food items, the sellers would first look at me as though they want to assess my cooking prowess, then go ahead to give me prices that didn't tally with the list my friend wrote for me - yes, I had to beg a friend to write a list for me to shop with and she did. Lol
Somehow, I was able to bargain at some places and got them at the exact price she wrote for me but got them at higher prices at most places.
At this juncture, I realized that most sellers will inflate prices at will when they see a male trying to buy foodstuffs. I know this because after I bought plantain, a woman came to buy plantain and pointed at the exact bunch I bought and the starting price the seller gave to her was much lower than mine.
After a hectic time in the market, I finally got home and began to cook. Before now, I had watched a YouTube video on steps for preparing the food I wanted to eat.
Well, to cut this long story short, I think I'd need to enroll for cooking classes as watching videos from YouTube didn't help.
The sad part was that my family called on video call and demanded to see what I cooked. When I showed them, they all laughed. It almost ruined my day but then, we move!
Once again, I am reminded that cooking shouldn't be a gender thing for women,but a life skill that should be learnt by all.
Am I giving up on cooking?
No.
I will keep trying, and who knows, I might just become the next big chef.
Until then, I remain the foodie that cannot cook.
