For every success story, there is always a price paid, a sacrifice made. An action done for the greater good. For Liverpool FC, leaving the English League Cup to chance was the sacrifice made so as to have a chance at world glory, which they eventually claimed. You can't have it all, you should therefore give priority to what seems more valuable.
When Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp left the junior team to face Aston Villa in the English League Cup Quarter Final last week, many fans and sports analysts believed it was a bad move for the Reds. This is probably because English clubs before now gave very little attention to the FIFA Club World Cup.
Eventually, it was a worthwhile sacrifice. According to Jordan Henderson, "World Champions sounds very nice". Liverpool went all the way to Qatar, to return with the trophy for the first time, after defeating Flamengo 1-0 in extra time, When Roberto Firmino hit the target at the 99th minute. The only English club that has lifted this trophy before now is Manchester United who won it in 2008 after defeating LDU Quito by a lone goal.
Before the final match, Klopp said "Flamengo got sent here from their country with a clear order: to win it, and come back as heroes. We got told: stay at home and play the Carabao Cup. That’s a massive difference, and we cannot change that. But we are here and my team wants to win the competition. He was however determined to take Liverpool to a position that no previous manager has at occupied - that's the Club World Cup.
This is a fresh record made by Liverpool, and a very commendable one. As a manager, there are difficult decisions to be made, especially amidst several oppsoing comments from fans, but when you hold on to a decision that brings in glory, it is a plus. This is congratulations to the Reds.
World Club Champions really sounds very nice. You'll Never Walk Alone...
