By now most cities have it: the love lock bridge

The exact origins of this tradition remain quite unclear, but it would seem obvious if it it started in the city of love: Paris. Another possibility is that it started when two lovers locked their devotion on an unknown bridge in the middle of nowhere. In what ever way this tradition started, it is clear that this has been a major trend in recent decades.

Many bridges are completely full of them, with some being in danger of actually breaking down. But it is all in the name of love, of course. But how many of these locks still represent that sweet pledge two lovers once cast? I wonder: 90%, 80%, 50% or a meager 30%!? The answer to that question will most likely never be known, but it is probably safe to assume that it's not at the higher end of the spectrum.

Locks hanging, clinging to a steel frame, rusting away with time. It's quite symbolic. But of what? Of love? Of human relationship? Of the human condition?

I guess there isn't a straight answer to that as well. And that's probably the lure of attraction: anybody can interpret it differently, in their own sentimental way. Although the main semantics seems to be self evident in our contemporary civilization: it's a message of love.

But what might archeologists in the (distant?) future think of these constructions, if they endure the edge of time? Will they understand the symbolism? Will they understand the motivation behind it?

Will the self evident still be self evident?

The enduring message and symbol for a pledge of companionship seems to play, as far as I can tell, an important part in human psychology. And as long as we don't transform ourselves into an extreme form of Transhumans which might then radically alter our consciousness, it is probably safe to say that even in the far and distant future, humans will still try to engrave and preserve their love in some way.

But will it still be on bridges? Will we even have bridges then? Perhaps not...
