Have you ever considered Steem, the blockchain, as a tool of storing memories, memories that you shared through your posts with all the details and feelings and that you can access decades from now?

I had a similar discussion on this with creatr@creatr a year ago. His idea was to build a library of his work on the Steem blockchain. Not necessarily a diary with memories but a library of all kinds of things, organised into different categories.

You can find it here:

It looks like a fair amount of work but it shows that is possible to use the Steem blockchain as a storage system.

Now that I understand the Steem system a little better, there are a couple of points as to whether the Steem blockchain will still be available decades from now:

  • In theory, Steem could run forever. In practice Steem will run as long as witnesses are willing to support the blockchain. If the price of Steem falls to zero and witnesses are no longer being rewarded sufficiently to cover their costs it is possible that the blockchain would fall into disuse. This is most likely to happen if Steem is superseded by better technology. If you look back 30 years for example, little of what was in use then is still employed. 30 years from now we may well be using virtual stored memories for the task you suggest.
  • Steem does not store pictures on the blockchain. Just text. The pictures are held on another system (IPFS I think) so may have less longevity than the words.

But overall I think it's a really interesting idea. It would be a transparent diary of thoughts but perhaps the actual user could be anonymous to protect identity. It could be really interesting to get a view of people's everyday feelings and an interesting resource to come back to yourself in the future. It could even be useful from a mental health perspective for people to get a more realistic view of thoughts than the current Instagram-based fiction that we are living through.
