What do you tell yourself at any point in a day?
When you wake up. When you go to work. When you see your boss or client. When you eat. When you are sad. When you are angry. When you are frustrated.
What exact words did you use on yourself?
Are you CONSCIOUSLY AWARE of what you tell yourself everyday?
WHAT is self-talk?
In my definition, self-talk is you are talking to yourself. It includes what you think and tell about yourself, someone else or something else. For example, if you see a thing or an event, and deem it is a problem, you are telling yourself "This is a problem. It's bad."
WHY Positive Self-Talk is So Important?

Self-talk shapes your reality. Let me tell you a short story of mine about this.
I was in a project, a year ago, where I was looked down by my superiors because of my incapability at work.
I felt like a cog
I felt useless, inexperienced and not appreciated. I felt like a cog in a wheel and manipulated by invisible strings to run the wheel. I began to make more mistakes and less important tasks are assigned to me.
I began to reflect
1 year down the road, I began to reflect on this event. Why is this happening to me? Why am I not getting out of that pitfall but I'm falling deeper and deeper?
I let other people determine my value
I have accepted whatever they have told me. I told myself,
You are unworthy of important tasks
You are incapable
You are useless, no one will appreciate you
Just stay put and do your job, no questions asked
Eventually, I did become unworthy, incapable, useless and just a cog. I see myself this way, and people see me this way too.
And this is how my self-talk shaped my reality.
I cannot stress enough that self-talk is so important to create the reality that you want. And the next big question is,
HOW DO I START?
All of us were at the same starting line. I didn't know what my self-talks are too. In fact, it is still very difficult for me to know. But as I became more aware of myself, my emotions and thoughts, I began to feel and listen to myself. Mindfulness meditation is a great way to start.
It takes consciousness and discipline
Here's how I started and how I maintained. It's very simple to consciously talk to yourself positively than identifying negative self-talks and negate them.
Do more of the good stuff is easier than eliminating the bad
My Self-Talks
I made a promise, a vow to myself, that whenever I feel bored, angry, depressed, nervous and any other negative emotions, I will consciously tell myself positive self-talks. I have a set of positive self-talks for different events.

When I feel bad emotions about myself
I am enough
I am enough
I have always been enough
And now that I know I am enough
Everyone else knows it too
And I will always be enough

When I feel bad emotions at someone
- Be kind to everyone as they are fighting their own battle
- We are all connected as one
- I'm sorry, please forgive me. I forgive you. Thank you. I love you.

When I encounter adversity
- I am grateful for this had happened to grow myself in all ways
- And I keep thinking on how this adversity will make my life better
Useful tips:
Focus on positive
Robin Sharma says "Human can only hold 1 thought at a time". If I focus my awareness and consciousness on positive self-talks and my negative self-talks will slowly disperse and disappear.
Do self-talk like you really mean them
Another tip is to say them like you really mean them. Repeat them over and over and over and over again. Until you feel lifted, lighter and good about yourself.
Write your own positive self-talk script
It can be anything, quotes that you find touching, words that you need to hear, traits that you want to become. Dreams that you want to achieve.
- Write down that script on a piece of paper, or on anywhere you will see everyday
- Tell yourself whenever you see that script.
- Put reminders to tell yourself.
- And feel the change.
Reminder: This is a conscious action. Do not assume you will talk to yourself positively automatically.
