Steem has several frontends. Almost anyone can host a frontend for example
the most common frontend is condenser, the code for condenser is hosted here:
https://github.com/steemit/condenser
Some well known and trusted frontends:
(I got the list from the settings page on https://minnow-power.net/ for GinaBot. Thanks to @neander-squirrel for this.)
- chainbb.com (This one has decomissioned recently unfortunately)
See: https://steemit.com/chainbb/@jesta/chainbb-com-going-offline
- busy.org (This one seems to be quite a favourite as it differs to steemit.com)
I assume it is using some custom frontend other than condenser. There are a few things
that I would like to say about busy.org, starting with: this is a very nice frontend.
I would really like it if the authors of busy.org would also add a feature like on
the steemit frontend where you can "toggle night mode", or even have different themes
that one could switch between, like with Slack's frontend and client.
Something I've been wondering for ages is if busy.org takes any percentage of your profits the way dtube and dmania does? If anyone knows about this please comment and let me know what you think.
- condenser.steemliberator.com
I'm not sure if this is standard behavior, but currently this site
redirects to steemit.com.
See:
$ curl -I https://condenser.steemliberator.com
- mspsteem.com
Seems legit. Looks just like the frontend at steemit.com. I don't know if it is trustworthy, I guess it depends how many people are using it.
- steeming.com
Um this really wasn't me. See screenshot:
https://yehey.org/
Looks almost exactly like steemit.com. As far as I know the user
who runs this frontend is also a steemit witness. What does that mean? Well
it means that enough people trust him and thats a good thing. Assuming he or she is a trustworthy
person then it would make sense for a user to make use of his frontend for accessing steem.http://steemitstage.com/
This one gave me an HTTP 500 at the time of writing.
KR Frontends. Steem is apparently very very big in South Korea. There are several
South Korean frontends for steem. I don't know enough about the different Korean frontends to be able to advise you on which one to use.
Frontends and phishing. Almost anyone can run a frontend for steem. Whether you like it or not you have to trust the person running the frontend. They can setup the frontend in such a way that they can intercept your keys if they really wanted to, because of how steem works. If this makes you paranoid you have two options:
- Run your own frontend
- Use a trusted frontend.
Problems present us with opportunity. I live in Africa and in Africa we have really good entrepreneurs. From a business point of view almost any problem presents us with a wonderful oppurtunity to solve that problem for other people and profit from doing so. This problem of trust and frontends can easily be solved if someone were to built a site where steemit users could login with steem connect and vote for frontends and comment on them. The site could have a blacklist of "known bad frontends" and a whitelist of known "good or trusted frontends". If you are thinking of becoming a witness this could be a cool project that you could use to promote yourself as a witness. This would also be a cool thing to add to your witness roadmap.
