Summer time on the Antarctic peninsula is incredibly active, as many different species converge into the coastal region to feed and breed, depending on the species. For cetacean species, aka whales, it is primarily feeding time, as the sea ice melts exposes the ocean, causing algae blooms and massive krill congregations that baleen whales gorge themselves on.
For humpback whales, they are estimated to feed on almost 1.3 tonnes of krill a day whilst foraging in waters around the Antarctic peninsula. So, sights like the one here is all too common when you are exploring around this region. As you can see the humpback whale's mouth is open in an attempt to get as much krill as possible into its mouth in one big gulp.
