Yesterday in the midst of insomnia I finished watching Vortex, the new film by the always scary and impactful Gaspar Noe. But unlike everything he has done so far, Vortex is more natural and calmer. I decided not to delve too deeply into the details of the film to see it without possible expectations (since they are not always met), and that was great, even though the film doesn't have heavy twists that impact the stomach and soul of the viewer, Vortex has that spiraling feeling of chaos and agony as in all his films, but it deals with a much more real and basic theme of humanity: the fragility of aging and its consequences.

Doing a little research I found that Noe had a serious stroke not long ago, and it was after this experience of surviving something that could have killed him or turned him into a vegetable that he decided to write this film. The theme is nothing new: an elderly couple in their last moment of existence, the difficulties, the reality, the simplicity. But of course, that's not all. Noe added the factor of Dementia/Alzheimer's to the character Elle, played by none other than Françoise Lebrun (a muse of the Nouvelle Vague) with all the naturalness of age stamped on her face and body, and heart problems to none other than Dario Argento in the role of Lui. Still, the film could be seen as perhaps a less subtle and careful film than Michael Haneke's award-winning Love, but Gaspar Noe decided to work with two consecutive frames on the screen, two cameras, two angles, all the time. Often showing both characters in their parallel actions.

The spiraling descent into chaos given by Elle's Alzheimer's has a potential for agony and claustrophobia, and Françoise's exquisite expressions of confusion and anguish make the experience quite sharp and intense, the film doesn't manage to reach mind-blowing and absurd levels in terms of its analysis of dementia and the aforementioned disease as Florian Zeller managed in My Father, But it is not fair to level it by the apex of the representation of the disease in cinema, because Gaspar Noe's idea was not to emulate something, but to show with his pessimistic and chaotic tone the daily life that precedes a tragic turn (and I am not giving any spoiler, since those who know Noe know that every film ends in tragedy). Overall it is a good film, it took two days to see it all, but still it is not tiring despite its two-hour duration. Keep going Noe, you are a great director!
