Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

• Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
• We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
• Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
• Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
• We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
• Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Unmasking of Charles

My mom laughed before responding. "Were you not there on several occasions that I registered my suspicion about the way Charles was running his business? Your dad would always convince me otherwise, but the smoke was glaring, which indicated the presence of fire."

Curator's comment :

lightpen tells the story of a respected young merchant whose store burns down twice, and it is discovered that he is commiting insurance fraud. Lightpen does an excellent job of telling a well-rounded story that intersperses discussion among his family about the man and his shop, including a disagreement between his parents who assessed the merchant differently. All is revealed after he burns his store down the second time to receive the insurance payment. Nicely written!

About fifteen minutes later, I saw a figure swaggering down the road towards me, I knew it was him, with that nonchalant gait and a bit of a bow leg. He looked slender, yet towering because of his broad chest. I sauntered towards him, a sour look on my face.

Curator's comment :

The author's voice rings true like a bell as she speaks of an attachment to an unworthy young man. Her use of language is subtle, but powerful, as she describes the young man's behavior. The narrative is exquisitely relatable.

I sat for about five minutes and then he came in. The moment he saw me, he quickly went back outside. Stood by the door for some brief seconds, probably to rehearse his lies, and then came in.

bipolar95 writes a CNF with a very interesting cynical tone, which successfully becomes humor.

This Week's Prompt 96:

Steal someone's thunder

The Cambridge Dictionary defines "Steal someone's thunder" as :

to do what someone else was going to do before they do it, especially if this takes success or praise away from them.

• Perhaps a friend or enemy copied your work and presented it as their own.
• Maybe you knew that someone was going to steal your idea, but you used stealth to beat them to the post.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

• You have 6 days to write your story from the date of this prompt post. Be sure to check the deadline countdown.
• Write a real-life story with the creative elements of fiction, like characters, dialogue, scene setting and a story conflict.
• Post your story in The Ink Well Community.

• Stories must be written in English. If you've translated the post, it's best to add the original version below the translation. Do not write mixed language paragraphs.
