Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

• Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
• We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
• Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
• Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
• We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
• Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Next, he turned to my daughter and questioned, "Chidera, you didn't tell your mommy that today is midterm?" At that moment, I panicked; I was confused and didn't know what to do. But I quickly pulled myself together and asked the security man, "If they're on midterm break, what was it they had the previous week?" He responded, "Midterm test."

Curator's comment :

bipolar95 writes an excellent CNF for the mixed-up prompt, in which she confuses a school notice about a mid-term test her daughter was due to take with a mid-term break. So she and her daughter have a wonderful break together in which her daughter accompanies her to work and gets pampered by all the staff. But the shocker comes when she takes her daughter back to school the following week and it's closed. They have missed the exam and taken the break when her daughter should be in school. She does a very nice job of describing the emotional highs and lows of the entire situation.

Dawned on Me

And for the first time since I moved in, I saw Mama Chinedu differently. This time, not as a nosy neighbor, not as a meddlesome old woman, but as a mother who had loved and lost her daughter.

Curator's comment :

We visit once again with Mama Chinedu in @zerah's story. This is like revisiting a neighbor. We have met Mama Chinedu before and she has become a familiar personality. In this piece, @zerah explains how her close relationship with Mama Chinedu evolved. The story is touching, well written, and entertaining.

My art instructor noticed first. "Your sketches are rushed. That unique touch you are known for is missing. What's up with you these days?"

Curator's comment :

In this CNF, happy080 gives us insight into the mindset that helped her eliminate negative influences and focus on her studies. With excellent descriptions and demonstrative dialogue H pulls us into the chaotic scenes that distracted her and ultimately pushed her to reassess her ambition and regain control.

This Week's Prompt 130

That's a load of balderdash.

Balderdash may be used to describe something as absurd, nonsensical, or ridiculous.

• Perhaps someone accused you of talking rubbish, but you were vindicated when it was proven true.
• Maybe someone spread stories about you that you proved were untrue.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

• Write a real-life story with the creative elements of fiction, like characters, dialogue, scene setting and a story conflict.

• Stories must be written in English. If you've translated the post, it's best to add the original version below the translation. Do not write mixed language paragraphs.
