I've always been an animal lover. Growing up with lived in a fairly remote area next to a mountain and not far from a river. We had a lot of animals over the years. Dogs, cats, rabbits, ducks, turkeys, and even a pygmy goat at one point. I guess it's part of the reason I've picked up so many animal coins over the years.

A few months back I shared a similar coin from 1972, but this is a nice 1971 version. Again it has the nice flamingo design on the back and Elizabeth II on the front.

Photos mine

About the coin:
Country: Bahama Islands
Denomination: 2 Dollars
Year: 1971
Strike type: Proof
Mintage: 60,000
Composition: 92.5% silver/ 7.5% copper
Weight: 29.81 grams
Diameter: 40.01 mm
Thickness: 2.69 mm
Edge: Reeded
Mint: Franklin Mint, Wawa, Pennsylvania
Engraver: Arnold Machin
Obverse: Elizabeth II
Reverse: Two flamingos, national bird

I love this particular coin series. They were produced by the Franklin Mint which always produced such nice coins, now they sell gifts and no longer mint coins or bars. A true shame.... These are great to collect as sets because they aren't too expensive and they're great to silver stack as well since they are sterling silver. Last time I shared one of these I talked about Bimini, but today I thought it would be fun to look at some flamingos!

Unfortunately no flamingos live around here, except at the San Diego Zoo. I'm not about to drive down there just to take some good pictures so what I can find online will have to suffice for today!

The American flamingo lives throughout the Caribbean and down into the northern part of South America. Although it's an iconic symbol linked to Florida in the US there a few if any in the state. Hunting from Native Americans and later European settlers had essentially wiped out all of the population by around the year 1900. They on occasion do see some stray flamingos or some that have escaped captivity, but the flamingos were hunted to extinction in the state of Florida. Luckily their populations still thrive in the Caribbean and South America.

They are primarily birds that wade to eat in shallow saltwater sticking their heads underwater to scoop up any crustaceans, insects, worms, seeds, algae, and even can eat mud on occasion to extract nutrients from microorganisms. Although the reddish-pink coloration is the most common color, they are born white at birth. They can live up to forty years, which is atypically long for most birds. That was something I did not know! They tend to migrate from feeding area to feeding are in large flock sometimes up to 2,500 in number, it must be an amazing sight to behold!

Sadly they don't typically spend much time in the eastern Caribbean where I was living, so I've never seen them in the wild. The next time I'm in Colombia I'll have to make a point to try to seek out some flamingos flocks!

Thanks for taking the time to stop by today, I appreciate it. If you have any suggestions, questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thanks for your support!

And my disclaimer:

Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.
