Today I had been planning on going out in the yard and taking some more great pictures to share with everyone. However, hurricane Rachel had different ideas for the day. It's a Pacific hurricane heading towards to border of Mexico with the US near San Diego. It's already pushing in lots of thunderstorms and rain.
I went out and harvested a bunch of vegetables from the garden before the winds got too strong. I was going to snap some pictures but the wind is just to breezy to get clear shots as there are a few too many thunderstorms around. So instead here are some of the items I harvested!
For those from California you will notice I have used bags I picked up out of state to harvest. They are so much more convenient... In California they outlawed the thin plastic bags and stores can only sell you thick reusable bags. I bring my own bags when I shop, it's kind of a pain, but welcome to California! Whenever I travel out of state I hoard the thin plastic bags to use here for picking vegetables and even storing electrical cords...
Peppers
As I have mentioned in previous posts, this year I only planted jalapeños and shishito peppers. The jalapeño variety I chose was La Bomba II, I highly recommend them. Thick walls with lots a flavor and heat. Try growing them if you are a pepper fan! Shishito peppers are mild, only one in ten have any heat and taste great pickled or roasted up and then mixed in a sauce made of soy sauce, ginger, and garlic.
Some of the shishito peppers I picked today:
A few of the jalapeños I picked today:
These jalapeños have been in the refrigerator waiting to be pickled. That's why you see the condensate forming on them as they are cold and it is rather humid right now. I have some work to do this weekend!
Tomatoes
These are Jaune Flamme Heirloom Tomatoes, they taste great! But they have a very bad habit of cracking when the temperature changes. Since it's cooling off for a few days I picked some I feared might be at risk of cracking.
These are a Roma variety that are San Marzano tomatoes. They taste amazing and are very robust, and produce like wildfire. I picked a bunch even some almost ripe as it may be a few days before I can get back out to pick many more with the storm blowing in...
Broccolini
I harvested this broccolini a few days ago and plan on cooking it up this weekend. It's a hybrid of broccoli with Chinese broccoli developed in Japan some thirty years ago. It tastes great and is very tender. I love this stuff, and the best part is it will still produce all winter, even though more slowly as it cools down!
String Beans
The string beans are kind of slowing down. Partially because I had some spider mites attack them, I sprayed in with neem oil. Hopefully they will bounce back. But I just picked these a couple days ago:
That will do it for me today, I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the harvest. Sorry I couldn't get plant shots, but there is just too much wind, thunder, and lightning right now. Not to mention rain. Hurricanes don't come this way very often, but when they do they make a very rainy mess!
I hope you have a great weekend, and thank you for all of the support. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below!
