I suspended writing for a while and, I think I have lost my voice and enthusiasm neither do I feel worthy of being called a raconteur as my vocabulary seems to be in decline. This is because twice, I have had to revisit the dictionary to make sense of the meaning of a word I once knew. For every time the thought of my knowledge decline occurred to me, I felt frustrated yet I did nothing about it.
Although I have been reading, my attention span seems to have deteriorated and I can’t even spend 30 minutes on a book without sleep or boredom creeping in. I like to think all this decline took place when I lost 12 hours of my day to a job I once was elated about. The good and bad news is that I have resigned. I missed the freedom that working remotely gave me. I mean I didn’t have to spend all those hours moving in circles for a particular purpose, nor was my workload increased at will for some rigid pay. Some say quitting was me jumping the gun but my mental health was at stake.
I like to think I was employed professionally but the HR department wasn’t in any way professional as they weren’t trained to consider staff complaints. The room was constantly fully air conditioned, despite the weather. I wore thick clothes but the cold always seeped through, and it felt like a hole was being drilled in my chest, which affected my breathing. Being in a deeply air conditioned environment is something I like to think I am allergic to. But if regulated, can be withstood. I kept my chin up and filed a complaint but it was received with a cold shoulder. In their words “wear two or more wool clothing if you have to. The AC isn’t for you, only customer complaints will be attended to.”
The feedback was lurid, and I was indignant but needed life to grant me a good reason to tender my resignation without regrets. I don’t want to think the universe heard me because in a very tragic manner, an adroit acquaintance, who worked a job for the same amount of hours as me, passed away.
Backdrop, he was a sickler, yet worked 12 hours, under pressure. Yesterday, I tendered my resignation. Life, I suppose, had given me a heartbreaking reason to quit and focus on something that would give me time to do the things I love, while also being productive. I missed being immersed in a good book for hours. I missed having a good sleep. I missed wearing light clothes without catching a cold. I missed watching my favorite movie genre and doing my signature reviews. I missed simply living on this borrowed time we call life.
Although, life is indeed worth living, it is ephemeral. Bills need to be paid, but you should quit that job that’s taking too much more than it’s offering you.
Anyway, I’m back to working remotely and resolute to keeping my blog alive.
