Chapter one

I felt guilty for not being able to save the little girl, tears rolled down my cheeks and I wept uncontrollably. A lot of people were floating already as they were dead. The view made my entire body itch as we struggled to survive on our boards.

"How long do you think we can handle this Adella?" Mandy asked me, her teeth clattering as she was already catching a cold. Her body had turned pale white and she shook vehemently on her board, I rowed closer to her and tried comforting her. I couldn't afford to lose any of them. We gave ourselves words of encouragement while we struggled as hard as we could to survive.

The water had pushed us to different places we never knew. All we cared about was our lives, buildings without strong foundations were collapsing as the water level increased, the wind blew non-stop shaking trees, electric poles almost to the point of lifting humans from ground level.

Many people cried to us for help but our boards could only take one person on it or maybe two. That's if the second person was a child with light weight. I prayed in my heart to find refuge and just as if my prayers were answered we spotted a house on a Rocky hill but the water current around the hill was one that could kill us.

There was light shining from the house and with the darkness that had covered the earth, the place looked beautiful. It had green bushes around it and it was the only house on that hill, the water didn't rise to its level at all and we felt it was our only survival option.

We paddled faster and thankfully we got closer to the hill. We were good at climbing so we didn't find it difficult to climb the hill even though it was gonna be slippery, the huge stones could be our support but there was a problem. A mighty waterfall awaited us which was the only fear we had.

"Hey girl's hold on tight when we get closer to the hill, jump and hold onto the stones tight" I said to the girls while we paddled slowly trying everything in our power to keep our boards in the right direction. When we got closer, the first to jump was Mandy. I was so surprised at how she immediately let her fear go and jumped skillfully holding on to a stone as she climbed further to get a better place to stand and wait. Next I jumped successfully too but Clara was scared to death. "Jump Clara jump, I and Mandy said at the same time but she couldn't and the water force pushed her down the waterfall.

My heart almost left my body when I saw what happened, I didn't know what to think but I experienced the shock of my life that I almost slipped off into the water. Mandy wept as she climbed up the Rocky hill. The rocks indeed were helpful, some looked like steps at some point and we combed successfully till we got to the top.

Mandy was terribly cold, her legs shook uncontrollably and her teeth kept gnashing. I knocked at the door and an old lady opened immediately asking us to come in. She was so kind and offered us blankets to sit at the fireplace while she prepared hot coffee. The house was a very fine string house. We could hear the wind from outside but nothing shook the house.

I knew in my heart that I was gonna ask this lady how she got to build such a house. Maybe she knew the storm was coming, who knows? For now, Mandy and I decided to rest and think of our best friend we just lost before throwing questions at our helper.
