"Imagine having to face a world where coffee has gone extinct due to a serious climate change?" I vented although I was the only one in the room cluttered with boxes. It's the year 2500, and coffee has become a distant memory, a luxury our generation could only dream of.
As I unpacked my belongings, frustration boiled inside me like a tempestuous storm.
Everyday has been like that because a part of my daily routine, a cherished ritual, had been cruelly taken away from me.
There was a constant ache in my heart, a craving for that familiar aroma and the comforting warmth of a coffee cup in my hands. The absence of coffee left a void in my life, a space that was once filled with the pleasure of that rich, aromatic brew.
Waking up to a world without coffee was pretty much of a frustration. I couldn't help but mourn the loss of a simple joy that had been an integral part of my existence. The memories of sipping coffee in cozy cafes, sharing conversations with friends, or finding solace in the quiet moments with a good book were now bittersweet.
I watched as others adapted to the new reality, exploring alternative beverages and flavors and there was me, feeling like an outsider in a world that had moved on from my beloved coffee, and a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era weighed heavily on my heart.
You see, it has been decades since I last sipped on that glorious elixir, and I miss it more than I can put into words. I exhaled from my thoughts and pushed the boxes in front of me aside, surrendering myself to sleep.
The morning sun cast long shadows through the windows and I jerked awake. The place was still a mess and I had a lot of work to do. Putting things in place was exhausting and a good cup of coffee would help but due to its extinction, I had to cross that out of my mind and get to work.
I started with the main kitchen, which was spacious and modern, a stark contrast to the dusty cardboard boxes strewn about. As I rummaged through the mess, I found my coffee maker. I held onto it no matter how hopeless the situation was in the world. Seeing the coffee maker kept memories alive.
The house was very spacious and there was something unusual about it. It was as if the house was trying to tell me a secret. I continued unboxing home appliances and putting them in specific places I wanted them to be while paying attention to every nook and cranny.
With cautious curiosity, I examined the wooden floor near the pantry which was lacking beverages. I was sure to fill that up as soon as I was fully settled in. My fingers explored every inch until, to my astonishment, I felt a hidden latch. Holding my breath, I pressed on it and the floor beneath me shifted, revealing a narrow, dark staircase leading downward.
"I'm not ready to die!" I exclaimed and shut it immediately but how could I live here knowing there's an underground room without wanting to explore it? I fought hard to resist the allure of the unknown but at last, my curiosity won. I quickly grabbed a flashlight and descended the creaky steps and it was as if I was enveloped in a musty, forgotten world.
The air was thick and foggy due to the high amount of dust. The flashlight was dim as it hadn't been charged for days. I struggled to see through the dust but as I got to the bottom of the stairs, I found some relic appliances, draped in cobwebs and layers of dust. "An underground kitchen eh?" I was stunned, my frustration washed away as the sense of adventure gripped me.
In one of the old boxes laid a vintage coffee grinder. It was still in its pack and looked like something that hadn't been used ever since its purchase but it was what I found next that left me breathless.
Tucked away amidst the antiquated kitchenware, I spotted a vacuum sealed packet of coffee beans.. My heart raced, and I couldn't believe my eyes. A luxury that had become extinct for decades, sat before me, preserved in all its glory. A gasp escaped my lips as I gingerly pulled it out.
The faint aroma, long forgotten and intoxicating, wafts from the packet as soon as I cracked the seal. Excitement surged through me as I held that faded but recognizable coffee packet in my hands. It was a relic of a bygone era. I couldn't wait to brew a cup and savor the flavors of a time long past, making my underground kitchen discovery all the more thrilling. It was as if this house held secrets and surprises I could never have imagined, and I was eager to uncover more of its mysteries.
With trembling hands, I ascended the stairs. In a haste, I setted up my dusty old coffee maker and carefully emptied the contents of the packet into the filter and pressed the start button. As the machine came to life, I watched with a mix of anticipation and nostalgia as memories of cozy coffee shops and shared moments flooded my mind.
I could hear my heartbeat as the first drop of coffee dripped into the pot. I waited eagerly till it was completely brewed then I poured the hot, dark liquid into a cup, and its aroma filled the room. Steam curled upwards, like the whispers of a forgotten world. I took the cup to my lips, hesitating for a moment before taking that long awaited sip.
The taste was heavenly as a symphony of flavors danced on my tongue. It was rich, robust, and carried a hint of bitterness that I knew the world including myself missed so dearly. Tears welled up in my eyes as I savored every sip, and memories of beautiful coffee days flooding back with each swallow.
It was a bittersweet moment, a taste of the past in a world that has been forever changed by climate issues. As I drowned the last sip, I couldn't help but wonder if there were more hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. I felt proud I bought the house and I was hoping to find more remanants of the past that would bring a sense of nostalgia and warmth into my life.
