In almost every area of life there is someone who has been there and done that. We each have our journey yet often we follow the paths laid out before us, at least in sections if not fully. Many people will do a normal job, I’m not talking about a 9-5, because well frankly in todays world who the hell works those hours?
In each and every area we dedicate our lives to. Yes dedicate is the correct word here, whether you are consciously aware of your dedication or not, you still are dedicated; just by the number of hours you spend at your job. 10 hour a day, that’s dedication, it really doesn’t matter what the task is. It can be stacking shelves in a Tesco’s or playing professional football. Either way this is what you have chosen to do. And you have "chosen" to do it, through your actions of turning up each and every day, this is your chosen dedication.
There are many people who have been there and done what you are doing. It’s a very simple equation and it comes down to time. You can struggle away and create, build or develop your skills on your own. That’s where most people are. That takes times to climb the ladder of knowledge and understanding in your chosen field. So if you have access to information and advice to increase the speed of your learning exponentially why would we not pursue this. If your aim is to be successful then we must embrace all areas of improvement, a mentor is but one part of the overall.
There are many forms of mentors or mentorships. Some are people we have access to and can approach and meet with. Some are successful people that you want to emulate. They can still be mentors. I have many mentors that I’ve never met, many that I have that do not know they are a mentor to me. Friends can be mentors, infact many mentors I’ve had have become friends, some mentors are even dead now.
The reality is that many successful people, be it in business, finance, acting, sports, really every and any area you can think of; they’re all just people and many of them have gone through a lot of shit to get to where they are. Because of this they have had help along the way, they’ve had their own mentors and many will be excited to speak with you. Approach each of them with a plan, with determination and drive.
There are many ways to connect with your mentors:
Meet in person
Call them
Email
Message
Turn up at there office
Listen to interviews
Follow their writings; books blogs
Podcasts
Youtube
Many have mentor programs
Offer to work for them paid or free
Tell them you want them to be your mentor
