Tomorrow, my wife finishes her last day before her own summer vacation starts and as a surprise, Smallsteps and I decided to do all the cleaning of the house today. We have been "planning" it for about a week already, and when asked by her mother what we will be doing during the last few days, she has said, "this and that" and winked at me. So, this morning, we cleaned together while my wife was working and the house is looking pretty good.
We had a bit less time than expected, so we didn't mop.
We got a late invite to head over to a friend's place to celebrate the Fourth of July with him and his partner, as he is American and didn't have much planned for it otherwise. So, he decided to fire up the grill and put on some burgers and hotdogs, in true American style. Well, not completely American style - nothing was covered with powdered sugar.
I have never been to the US, but this is my assumption.
It was fun though, as we sat around talking while grilling, and then talking over eating the meal and then dessert, which we took. I don't think it was traditional American fare, but it was easy, since we bought it all on the way. Chocolate mud cake, fresh strawberries from a local farm, and vanilla ice cream. Very good.
It wasn't a late night, as my wife is still working tomorrow and we have Smallsteps with us. We tend not to push it too much with her schedule, as even though she is on holiday, she will get up early anyway - as kids do. This means that she doesn't get enough sleep and then doesn't enjoy the following day as much. Though she is still far more active than us.
As older parents, we are in different stages of parenthood than many of our friends of a similar age, whose kids have already grown up, with some being adults themselves. This means that it can feel a bit strange at times or perhaps I think it might be a bit strange at times for these kinds of invites, because we always have Smallsteps with us. For this particular invite it wasn't an issue at all as they get on like a house on fire, but in general it might be.
However, I also think it is good for Smallsteps to spend time interacting with adults also, as well as learning how adults interact with each other socially. It is a remodeling opportunity for her, and I hope that in the future she is able to have friends that she can not only spend time with laughing, but also be comfortable having her kids around also - if she has them that is. I hope she does!
I'd be an awesome granddad.
I'm getting ahead of myself for sure.
But a guy has the freedom to dream.
