WHAT IS READING? This is a process of communication involving the writer and the reader:the encoder and decoder. Reading is also a process of extracting meanings from written languages. It is the first literacy skills and it is frequently more employed by any literate person than the writing skills.

Most people view reading as a simple,passive process that involves reading words in a linear fashion and understanding their meaning one at a time. It is only when a reader is able to get the total message,information,understanding or meaning of what is in print that reading is adjudged to have taken place.

"There are two approaches to reading and they are;"

  • Intensive reading
  • Extensive reading.

Intensive Reading
This takes place when the readers take a text,study it line by line and refer at every moment to the dictionary about the grammar of the text itself. Intensive reading takes a lot of time. The purpose of intensive reading is to study a text in great detail.

Extensive Reading
This takes place when the reader tries to cover vast amounts of materials but just skip over the parts he doesn't know and try to get the general gist of things. Extensive reading is rapid reading. The attention of the reader is paid to the text itself and not to the language. The purpose of it is for fun and pleasure with information.
Examples of Extensive reading include the reading of fiction e.g "Things Fall Apart", "No Longer at Ease", by Chinua Achebe etc.

Extensive reading has many benefits and they are;

  • It can provide massive comprehensible input.

  • It leads to improvement in writing.

  • It can motivate learners to read.

  • It helps to build confidence with extended texts.

  • It facilitates the development of prediction skills.

  • It can enhance learner's general language competence.

  • It increases knowledge of previously learned vocabulary.

  • It teaches learners about the culture of the target language.

THE PURPOSE OF READING
Different people read for different purposes. These are;

1 School or Educational Purpose: People read to increase and update their knowledge. It is always said that, "a reading man is a living man". When people read,they get to know the developments that have taken place on a particular subjects.

2 Reading for Information: Purpose of reading is to get information that is useful on daily basis. The world is full of events and happenings. So when one reads,there is information that will come accross the person

3 Reading for Relaxation: At the close of work or business for the day,people are tired. The literate among them usually recreate by reading a literary text or newspaper to avoid boredom.

While reading interests some people,there are some students that detests reading. There are reasons for that.

  • Firstly,reading is an active process. It requires work. A good reader does not remain passive while reading. This is because the exercises requires that the reader decodes,visualizes,reacts to and interprets what is on the page. The more difficult and challenging the reading material,the more actively involved the reader must be.
    Some students of these days are not ready to take the tasks.

Secondly,most students associate reading with reading test and work both to be avoided at all costs. It is because of this fearthat they have lost the wonder that reading provides.
