Today’s photo shows a statue of Saint Wendelin.
Placed just above the parking area where we stayed.
We discovered it during a walk.
Standing quietly between two shaped trees, watching over the place.
Later back in the camper curiosity appeared.
Who was Wendelin?
Saint Wendelin is a figure from early Christian tradition. He is known as the patron saint of shepherds, farmers, and livestock. According to legend he lived as a hermit in the forests of what is now south-west Germany and the Saarland. People say he gave up a royal life to live simply.
Working with animals. Living close to nature. Helping people when they asked. Because of this many rural places still keep statues or small chapels dedicated to him. Especially in regions where farming and vineyards shape the landscape.
So seeing him here above the camper place felt somehow fitting.
A quiet reminder of older rhythms that once defined these regions.
Travel sometimes brings small encounters with history.
A statue. A question. A short search later a story appears.
Observed while moving. Left unfinished.
