My neighbor and I always got along well. A few years ago, he suffered a serious fall and has been living in a nursing home ever since.
At first, his property was still maintained by family members. But for the past three years, it seems that nobody has been taking care of it. One of the large trees is slowly dying. A few days ago, when strong winds came through, several branches fell. My van is parked nearby, and I couldn’t help wondering what might happen if one day it wasn’t just a branch, but the top of the tree that came down.
Today I visited him at the nursing home. Sadly, he is barely able to communicate anymore and couldn’t tell me who is now responsible for his affairs. So I left my contact details with the nursing home’s staff and asked them to have his family get in touch with me.
I also know that there have already been disagreements within the family over who will inherit what. That makes me hope even more that, at the very least, someone will take responsibility for the tree and the property. Sometimes it’s the little things that remind us how complicated life can become.
