"...tomorrow then. 5pm it is," I said into the phone and hung up. My best friend, Joel, had told me about this friend of his who he was sure I would like. And without seeking my consent, he had gone along to do some matchmaking. And we already got plans to meet up.
Next day, I was very nervous but was concerned to look my best and just be the part. It was to be a simple outing and dressing casually would have been it but you cannot tell what these ladies want. I also wanted to impress her.
So, I put on a white shirt over black pants and wore matching shoes and wristwatch to get the best look. I turned over in front of the mirror and gave a smile at how dapper I looked. I picked my phone and turned around, walking to the door. The destination; City Cafe Restaurant (my other best place). She had given me the honours to choose the location so why not.
Seated from across each other at the restaurant.
"You look so beautiful, better than in pictures," I told her.
"And you look amazing," she complimented.
"I try. Thank you. Umm...you hungry?, I asked, while signalling the waiter.
"You asked to come hungry. So, what do you guess?"
I smiled at that. Almost immediately, the waiter got to our table.
"Good evening Sir, Ma'am!"
"What do you order?" I turned to ask her
"I'll have whatever you do," she mentioned.
"You sure," I asked.
"Of course, yes.."
"All right. turning my gaze to the waiter "Just get two rounds of my favourite, please."
The waiter gave a slight bow and hurried along.
"What's this favourite of yours?" she asked, beaming.
"You'll see it once it gets here. Be patient, lady."
She let out a laugh that I found so interesting and then asked, "tell me more about yourself?"
We were having the conversations when about four minutes later, the waiter showed up with our order.
Just as the tray was set before her, I watched her face for reactions. She looked from the plate of pasta to the mug with coffee and I saw her scrunch up her nose.
"Your mood just changed. Is there a probl...do you not like the food," I asked very worried.
"No, it's not the food. I don't like coffee," she blurted.
"Excuse me?" I said.
"The smell gets me heady and I can't stand the taste."
"W-why?" I questioned.
"It just has never worked with me plus the taste is awful."
I felt hurt.
"Ouch," I said, making a show of holding my chest. "There's definitely different ways to brew yours. You probably got.."
"I apologise for cutting you short but, I don't like it. I tried having if in different ways and I even thought of myself as weird for always standing out as the one person who doesn't...but that's just been it "
"...Hmmm" I exhaled loudly.
"Is everything okay." she asked
"Yes, yes-of course. It's just- This happens to be one of my favourite drinks. And you not liking it is....I don't know."
"Will that be a problem?" she asked.
"No, you tell me. Will there.?"
She let out another laugh that made me notice her diastema. She was beautiful.
"It shouldn't. Except - but Whatever your take is fine"
"Maybe you could just have a sip of this coffee and probably, you could have a changed mind.
"Don't push it, please."
"Oops! I apologise, but I was just kidding. I like coffee and I like you. I can't tell you off for not liking what I do. I can always have my drink while you stay away so you don't get irritated."
"Mmmm" she nodded.
"...besides, am sure there'll be things you would like which I wouldn't. We'll just learn to deal with it."
"Compromise," she said. It was supposed to be a statement but it came out as as a question.
"You got it! You're very smart."
"Stop with the flattery," she said shyly.
"I'm not." I paused and continued "in just minutes, we've been able to handle one contrasting thing about us. I'm very pleased."
"I agree. I do" she said.
"Now, let me have that." I murmured.
I stretched and took her cup of coffee while I signalled the waiter to get her something else in replacement.
