Today, I decided to share some of the floral images I took over the summer. Now that fall has arrived and the rainy days are back, I am cleaning out some of the extra photos from the computer.

Salvia

The above image is of one of the Salvias I grow from seed every year to use as a border plant.

This taller blue Salvia graces the rock garden that is close to the road along my driveway. I love planting this there for the pollinators because it is fairly drought-tolerant. I rarely water this garden unless we have a very long dry spell.

I also grow many different types of Zinnia for my butterfly gardens. This is a grouping of the pink varieties.

Phlox

This is one of the mid-summer flowers I grow and the pink phlox blooms in the front of my home.

This white phlox is named "David" and it is just stunning for one of the moonlight garden flowers. It has an absolutely amazing scent. The entire yard fills with its fragrance and my neighbors always ask me which flower smells so wonderful.

The third phlox that I have around my home has a sweet pink center. This one is just so delicate looking and adds a nice touch to the garden every year.

Echinacea

This is a staple for my butterfly garden. I have three different varieties for them to enjoy.

As you can see the bumblebees love the coneflowers and I believe it to be named "White Swan".

The lovely shade of orange-red coneflower. I am not positive but it may have been called "Splar Flare". I have had it so long that remembering the names of some of my flowers oftentimes alludes to my memory.

The last one is the classic purple coneflower "Echinacea Purpura".

I have so many different colors scattered around my entire home. I should do a separate post just to showcase them all. I love that they continue to put out new blooms for a few weeks every year. The spider variety blooms for a shorter time for me for some reason.

Black-Eyed Susan

A garden is not complete without a bunch of Black-Eyed Susans to enjoy from mid-summer into fall. They always make a bold statement in the butterfly garden. Who doesn't love a pop of yellow at the edge of the garden?

These flowers are so bold and bright mixed with the orange marigolds. I just love having them in the garden.

garden-iris.jpg

Louisiana Iris

This is the one and only Louisiana Iris I have left that continues to bloom. I used to have a dozen or so different ones but they have all died off over the years. I still have one more that sends up leaves each year but has not bloomed in a very long time. I keep hoping at some point that it will.

Hosta

What would the shady areas of one's gardens be without hostas. They offer so much texture and color to those shady spots and the floral scapes are enjoyed by so many little creatures. Many of the ones I have are very fragrant and I love taking a few moments to enjoy the delightful scent of each one.

Delphinium

One of my favorite flowers for the butterfly garden. I love the tall spires of continuous blossoms and the bees love them too. I do have to support them so that the wind and rain do not take their toll on them. There are so many beautiful hues to enjoy and I do need to replenish them next spring.

butterfly bush.jpg

Buddleia

I only have one Butterfly Bush left in my garden scape and it is a beautiful purple. I had three varieties over the years but two of them became so woody and large that we had to remove them. I have this one at the very edge of my property where it is allowed to grow wild.
As you can see this Swallowtail is thoroughly enjoying its nectar. When I release the Monarch butterflies every year they swarm to the Buddleia bush.

Hydrangea

What would the landscape be without the beautiful flowers that adorn so many varieties of Hydrangea. I do have a few different ones growing throughout my gardens and will someday just focus a post on them. They photograph so nicely and each bush has many shades of pink, purple, and blue tones.

The post is getting a bit long so I will call it a day my friends. I hope you have enjoyed seeing some of my favorite flowers, especially dswigle@dswigle who created the community "Always a Flower".
