Let’s just make it clear from the get go that this awe-some comment did not come from one of my admirers and was aimed at the person in the room next to me. Yeah sure I have a constant retinue chomping at my heels ready to lend an uplifting gesture at any opportunity.. well not quite, actually nothing like that not even remotely close. I’m more like Fergie without the looks and voice, you won’t find me flaunting my extremities empowered by a demanding voicebox hanging from a swing made of neon lights and a studded cape sweeping the stage floor. Sounds fun though, right!
I’m more like that person deliberating over the fact that I should probably eventually find a new pair of shoes because the holes in these ones have finally started showing off my toes because I’ve just spent all my money on a nice set of pencils, a telescope and a tent. You could probably find me standing over a suitcase spewing it's contents over the sidewalk in fresh green notes wondering how it got there, why it’s there, what to do with it, if it’s a trap or who to give it to. Yoink! Someone else just snapped it up and ran off with it. Yep, I’m still standing there thinking where did they come from!? I wonder if they’re going to use it for good or for evil. "Beeeeeeeep get off the road!!!" Don’t see Fergie doing that do ya?
I do appreciate the endless source pool where people place their values, what their attachments are and what makes them feel good. I would absolutely swap lives with Fergie, but just for one day to experience a different way of life. I would also swap with a Navy SEAL, a homeless person, a politician, an Amazonian tribal chief or a yogi. I know I’m constantly losing perspective of my fortunes and misfortunes weather it be surface level stuff such as looks and clothes, or deeper stuff like how much enlightenment cuts through everything, and I mean everything, all the progressive layers of bullshit accumulated over a lifetime.
To remedy that, I like to ask what if I were able to use my lifetime to experience a day in the life of everyone else, I imagine I’d be so far past messed up I wouldn’t be messed up at all, I wouldn’t have an identity or an attachment to one belief system, I would be attached to all beliefs and therefore attached to none. Maybe I could write a song about that and get signed by a record label and find myself swinging from a neon lit swing while my cape sparkles blind the audience with its high intensity degree of fabulousness.
And there in that dressing room after that admirable comment that graced my eardrums, a moment of silence to process turned into an eternity of perspective. The dress went back on the hanger destined for the rack, to be picked up by the next Fergie doppelgänger to carry out her quest to impress.
