Today's game is a very special one, one that it's almost impossible that any of you haven't played or that at least know it, because regardless of how good we are playing, the first thing we will see is:
Yup, Dark Souls, a relentless franchise with the player, but for the moment I'll put it aside to talk only about the first game, before which Demon's Souls already existed, but it was Dark Souls that woke up the fever of this kind of games.
From the hands of From Software, with Hidetaka Miyazaki at the helm, in 2011 Dark Souls was released, a title for which surely more than one was not even prepared.
The story is anything but explicit, as it is narrated through characters, objects, and the environment itself, without the need for a constant narrative, but if you don't pay attention, surely you won't understand, or you will skip details, we could say that the game is difficult even to understand the story.
Simply put, we are an undead, one like many, who according to what they say, would be chosen to make a pilgrimage, and thus discover the true destiny of the undead, a task that is no longer clear, and it isn't easy at all.
As soon as we start we will have to create our character, totally to our liking, both physically and in terms of the class we will adopt, there are also several from which to choose, all with their virtues and defects, strengths and weaknesses, and for which there are different types of equipment from which we have to choose very well.
At the beginning we may notice something strange in our character, and that is that he/she does not resemble in ANYTHING that we probably spent almost an hour customizing, this happens since we appear as an undead, the appearance that we customize is our human form, the which we can get (and lose again) later, but all in good time.
At the gameplay level, Dark Souls is a third person rpg, but not turn-based, but with an active combat system that never becomes hack n 'slash, and I will explain why. At the beginning we have two different bars, one is red, and the other is green, the red is the life bar, instead the green is the stamina bar, every time we attack or block an attack, this bar goes down, also when we run, jump or roll, each effort of the game consumes a little of this bar, when it is exhausted we will not be able to do anything beyond walking, which puts us in a dangerous position.
Each character has a light attack and a strong attack, one expends more stamina than the other, apart from variants of both, such as a jump slash, a lunge, a spin attack, a somersault slash, and two different critical attacks, one when we deflect one attack correctly, and the other attacking some enemies from behind, both very powerful and good offensive options for all classes.
After a bit of tutorial, we will arrive at what is probably the most beloved element in the entire Dark Souls world, the bonfires, spread all over the world and that function as the only save and rest points, but the enemies that we have killed also reappear before sitting at the bonfire. It's also where we can recover our human form using an object called Humanity, very useful and extremely important in the main mechanics of Dark Souls, because the greater our humanity, the greater the probability that they will give us objects, the greater our resistance to curses, but the risk is also greater, because when we die we will lose the humanity that we have used.
Another important thing that we can use in the bonfires are the souls, which work like the experience in other RPGs, with them we raise different attributes of the character, such as vitality, stamina, intelligence, dexterity, or even faith, all this having different effects, for example, weapons require a minimum level in some attributes to be used properly.
For example, if we are lucky enough to get a very good sword, which does a lot of damage at the beginning of the game, it is likely that when it comes to brandishing it, our character will do it very slowly and inefficiently, spending all the stamina and being very easy to dodge, this changes when the attributes meet the minimum required, it may happen that the weapon is still too heavy to use well with one hand, but it is possible to use it with two hands properly, or directly if we comply with all the requirements, it will work like the sword we had before.
Another important thing to take into account is the weight of the equipment, the higher the weight, the lower the agility of our character, so the most appropriate thing is to increase the stamina so that in that way we can equip heavier things without losing so much agility, This means that when it comes to rolling, the character takes longer to get up, and is slower when running.
As you can see the character evolution system is very deep, it is impossible to cover everything so we have to generally focus on a character who is very good at something, instead of being balanced in everything, at least that is my vision though, however, it's also not good to depend entirely on a single strong point, because perhaps with a boss it will be useless and we will have to make an effort to climb levels to compensate.
And this is where I wanted to get, to the bosses, giant and majestic creatures as well as intimidating, when there is a cinematic, you know that the real terror comes.
Who doesn't remember the Bell Gargoyles? Probably the first great nightmare of many who entered this dark world, YouTube is full of people who lose their composure in front of this boss, who actually turns out to be double, because when we believe that we take the calm to the first gargoyle, another appears to bake us with its breath of fire, certainly formidable enemies, who must be defeated or with intelligence, or with good equipment, preferably a mixture of both.
And this is a formula that is repeated throughout the game, the difficulty at the beginning is overwhelming, with enemies that no matter how small they are, we must never underestimate or neglect, because they can still end us at the worst moment, the bosses always seem impossible to beat, no openings, just a giant accumulation of brute force that probably kills us with one blow, but the point of Dark Souls is not to give up, persevere until that boss that seemed impossible to you, becomes possible, and when you go to see, only their souls remain, you have won, you celebrate like never before, and you move on, an intoxicating emotion that very few games make us feel, without a doubt, a total and definitive recommendation, as always I invite you to tell me about your experiences u opinions about the game, especially the first one that is the one I focus on in this case.
And this is where today's post ends, as always, thank you very much for reading to the end, I hope you liked it, I must say that I haven't managed to finish it yet, it's a journey in which you have to enjoy the road as much as possible, going straight to the end is impossible for the average player though, so there is no other option.
With nothing more to add, see you in the next post, bye bye.
