Day 9 of my Splinterlands journey.
Today, I decided to pay more attention to something I don’t always think about enough: the opponent.
It is easy to get caught up in building my own team. I look at my cards, check the mana, think about abilities and try to create a lineup that makes sense.
But there is another player doing exactly the same thing.
That means I am not just building a team.
I am also trying to figure out what the other person might be thinking.
Sometimes, the available options give you a clue about the kind of lineup your opponent could use. If the mana is high, they might choose powerful attackers. If the rules favor defense, they might build a team that is difficult to break through.
Of course, I cannot know exactly what they will choose.
And that is what makes it interesting.
I started thinking about questions like:
“What would I choose if I were them?”
“What kind of strategy would make sense here?”
“Which part of my lineup could they try to exploit?”
These questions made the preparation phase feel more like a little game of guessing.
Sometimes I get it right.
Sometimes I completely misunderstand the opponent. 😂
There are also moments when I think I have figured out exactly what they are going to do, only for them to choose something completely different.
That is when I realize I probably shouldn’t get too confident.
One thing I am learning is that having a strong lineup is only part of the battle.
Understanding the situation is just as important.
You might have strong cards, but if your opponent has built a team that counters your strategy, things can become difficult very quickly.
That is why I have been experimenting more.
I don’t want to depend on one particular strategy every time.
I want to be able to change things depending on the situation.
Some battles require more defense.
Some require speed.
Some are about dealing as much damage as possible.
And sometimes the best approach is simply finding the right balance.
I also had one of those moments today where I thought I had made a really smart decision.
I looked at my lineup and felt confident.
Then the battle started.
A few turns later, I realized my opponent had a completely different plan.
😂
That is when you remember that you are not playing against the computer.
There is another person making decisions too.
They can surprise you.
They can use a combination you didn’t expect.
They can notice weaknesses that you didn’t even realize were there.
And sometimes they simply make a better decision.
I actually like that part of the game.
It means every battle can feel different.
Even if you use some of the same cards, the opponent can completely change the experience.
The biggest lesson from today is that I need to spend less time thinking only about what I want to do and more time thinking about what my opponent might do.
I’m still far from being an expert at reading lineups, but I am starting to notice more.
And every battle gives me another opportunity to improve.
Day 9 was another day of experimenting, observing and learning.
The journey continues.
