It's easy to be cynical about any such organisations, but they are not simple things. 'First contact' would really shake things up and change some perceptions. We just have to hope it is benign as any beings that could reach us would have better tech. The human ingenuity that always wins in the movies might not save us, e.g. implanting a virus in a computer system we know nothing about.
