Given they have a life of just a few years there will just be less born. They are being killed anyway, but now outnumber every type of large wild animal. They are not going to become extinct any time soon, but if meat was treated as more of a luxury then farmers could afford to give them a better life. Less countryside dedicated to cows and other large farm animals could free up some for nature as food crops need less land to feed us.
