When we built our house 14 years ago I had X10 light controllers fitted to use with the automation system we have now. Things have moved on since then and everything is wireless. Ikea have a range of smart lighting products that are fairly affordable. The lights are all LED and dimmable. You can just use them as a normal lights or add the hub to enable some automation. This system is supported by the Home Assistant software I've been using. Our X10 lights were getting interference from somewhere and I wanted something more flexible.
So far I've only played with the simple switches. I'll report later when I've tried the hub. Please post questions in the comments.
