Our new chickens have been getting into the laying habit during this week. They have learnt to go in and out of the coop by themselves and lay in the bed in there. They roost on a pole overnight.
When you have chickens you realise how variable eggs can be. In the supermarket they are all neatly sorted by size and colour. Our hens will each lay different colours, but they can vary a lot in size, from golf ball to WTF! One of these had a really delicate shell. Sometimes they lay an egg with no shell at all, so you just get a mess to clear up.
And where to eggs come from? Chicken bottoms! Those are very fluffy, but have a tendency to get gummed up with poo. Then you may have to resort to cutting some out. The feathers soon grow back.
We're getting two or three eggs each day from our four chickens. That's plenty for our needs and we'll share the excess with friends. We're not looking to sell them as that could get complicated. We'll happily exchange for other garden produce.
Isn't it eggs-citing? ;)
