Chickens are great diggers and our new batch have already been busy. We've found lots of parts of old bottles, but this is our first clay pipe. From what I can find it's probably Victorian, i.e. over 100 years old. It could well have been smoked by one of my wife's ancestors as they have lived here for a long time.
I found local references to pipes with crossed keys. One in Ashwell museum and a comment about one found in Letchworth. Those are only a few miles away.
We had to chase the chickens in again tonight, but after a while they jumped in the big door when I opened it. They will soon get used to going in to roost. We had our first two eggs today. I let the neighbour have them.
