For the last 2 weeks, the weather in Greece feels like we are in the middle of spring and not in the heart of winter. While I see many posts where it is snowing in some countries or extreme temperatures of -15 degrees Celsius, here the temperatures range from +15 to even +20 degrees Celsius.
This phenomenon is a weather event that we have here in Greece called Alkyonides ( Halcyon) Meres ( days).
Halcyon days are those winter days in which there is good weather with intense sunshine, without clouds and winds and sometimes with high temperatures for the season.
These days occur from December 15th to February 15th every year, and most often between January 16th and 31st.
But Why is this happening and it's so geographically specific to Greece.
From a meteorological point of view, in these days of winter due to the latitude of Greece, there is an equalization of pressures which results in on the one hand there are no winds, and on the other hand there is intense sunshine, even if the temperature is low.
But I really wondered, after a walk in the park, if this phenomenon can explain the appearance of caterpillars in the heart of the "winter"
Yes and no, the caterpillars begin to appear in the spring when the weather becomes warmer and sunnier and we have fewer rainy days. The climate we have experienced in recent weeks explains the appearance of the caterpillars, but the fact that they appear in February and not in mid-March, where we traditionally see caterpillars, is mainly due to climate change.
Whatever the reason i really like that kind of weather! I can go out and feed some really cute kitties
