Philosophy

“You’re late again.”

I hate it when this clown points me out. Like, you’re the ones that let me schedule these classes back to back. How was I supposed to know how far apart they were? Corey dropped into the first open seat he saw and it squealed like a pig.

With the majority of the class looking at him, Corey dug around in his bag. He whipped out his notebook and pencil. “Are you ready?”

Really? Twice in one class? Focus on someone else. Corey used the guy in front of him as a shield – twisting in his seat until he was safe from attack.

“Ahem,” Is that for me? Does he need me to answer?

“A-Hem.”

“Yes.”

“Yes what?”

“I am ready.”

Jesus my cheeks are hot. I want out of here. How much longer is this damned class? Stop looking at me – I practically ran here from my last class. You could have made the same scheduling mistake, nobody would have warned you. What is he saying?

“…Mr. Davis?”

Thank god. Call on someone else. I hope you get it wrong, Mr. Davis; I hope you embarrass yourself. Forty-seven more minutes – I can’t wait that long.

“Thank you, Mr. Davis.”

This class is sucking my life away. Time isn’t moving, but I can’t keep up. My notepad is blank. I wonder what everyone else is writing. I need to borrow someone’s notes. I need to catch up. Please God, get me out of this class without being called on. I need this class – or I’d drop it.

“…Mr. Thomka?”

“God damn it!” The room quickly filled with laughter and one voice calling for order. Ignoring everyone, Corey gathered his things, stood and walked out.

Now I have to change my major.

The End

Calling Off

I requested tomorrow,
does that mean I’m selfish?
Should I call her back, and
tell her I’ll be in?
What if she thinks I’m lazy?
What do I do then?

What if she can see me
for who I really am?
A dangerous degenerate.
A repulsive man.

I’m tearing up memories
and ripping out roots.
Tendrils wrapping round my throat
I have to ground my boots.

I smell a nightmare
polluting my future.
An unavoidable spike strip –
no chance at a U-turn.
It all comes back to my
abuser.

The End

I am really enjoying this experiment - pairing a flash fiction piece with a poem based on the same theme. I shall continue to explore this concept. Thank you so much to The Writer's Block. Their help is everything a growing writer needs and then some. If you are interested in improving your writing, I can't recommend it enough:
