Inside the shop, broken phones, laptops, and watches lined the counter. The owner spoke confidently, tapping a framed document on the wall. “Fully certified process,” he’d say.
Customers would walk in and be told to pay upfront. That was part of the “policy.”
In the back room, there was no special equipment, just a drawer full of identical replacement parts bought cheap in bulk. Every device got the same treatment, whether it needed it or not. Why would the customers need to now anything?
Most people came back later, still having problems. The owner would nod sympathetically and point again at the document.

The paper looked official enough that no one argued for long.
By closing time, the register was full, the complaints were filed away, and the sign in the window still told the truth, just not the one people thought it did. And that's how it went every day.
