It’s been a little over a year since I’ve started to wake up at 4AM. Of course, I don’t wake up every day at 4AM. Although I try.

There are days when I feel too tired. There are weekend days, when sometimes I sleep later. There are days when I miss my sleeping hour and this makes me changed the waking time as well. But these are exceptions.

Most of the time, I wake up at 4AM. Over the time, I’ve set up some ground rules for myself. Rules that, when applied, allow me to wake up at the set time.

Rule 1: Have a goal.

Without a goal, there’s no motivation and no action. Why would I wake up at 4AM and do nothing. It’s crazy. This is why I have a good defined goal that would allow me to wake up at 4AM. Most of the time it’s because I want to write something. Like this post right now. Or a chapter in a novel. Or a short story. Something… but something that would make me wake up.

Rule 2: Put the phone away from bed.

I use my phone for the alarm. I think most of us do the same. When you put the phone away, at least you have to out from bed and close the alarm.

There are times when I put the phone near the bed. And those are the mornings when I fail to wake up at 4AM. This rule is also important because of the next one.

Rule 3: Don’t go back to bed. Move around

When you go out of the bed to close the alarm, don’t just snooze the alarm and go back to bed. I do this from time to time. I press snooze, I take the phone back with me to the bed and I wake up at 5 or 6AM.

Don’t go back to bed. Go directly to the bathroom, wash your face, go and drink a glass of water. Move your body and wake up your mind. This way, your brain will become alert and the sleepiness will go away.

Rule 4: Go to sleep before 10PM

Probably this should be rule no 1, but it’s come up to me while writing. I’ve mentioned in the intro the sleeping time. 10PM is my sleeping time. After countless test I’ve discovered that going to sleep after 10PM will affect my time I wake up. Six hours it’s the limit time for myself. Although 10PM is my sleeping time, it’s not necessarily yours. You have to test it out.

These are the ground rules. There are many more things you can implement in your morning routine, but these can change from individual to individual. These few rules are the basics that you can implement right now. Not only for waking up at 4AM, but waking up at any hour you want to.

Waking up at 4AM is a choice. Not necessarily a necessity, but a choice. It’s a lifestyle that you choose. And because of this, rules need to be implemented.

What hour do you wake up?
