Talisman Spotlight — three Talismans with a Tier 3 mod, line by line

Every Talisman carries a Rules Mod. Some carry a second mod, and a few carry a third: a Tier 3 mod, the strongest line a Talisman can hold. This spotlight takes three real Talismans in circulation today, each with a Tier 3 mod, and reads every line on their plates.

Two things to know first

A Talisman rules your Friendly Lane. Its Rules Mod binds both halves of that Lane, your Monsters and your opponent's alike. The extra mods are different: they favour only you, and only on your half of your Friendly Lane.

Fated and Fortunate mods read your Luck. Luck is the score on the board that counts the randomness that broke your way. A Fated mod works while your Luck is below your enemy's, and a Fortunate mod works while it is above. The comparison is taken at the start of every battle round, and a tie switches on neither. Both scores start the match at zero, so a Fated or Fortunate mod stays off until the first stroke of luck moves the score.

Ferocity, Fated Legacy, Twin Fates

LineWhat it says
Rules Mod: FerocityAll units have Fury: double damage against a target with Taunt.
Tier 2: Fated LegacyWhile your Luck is below your enemy's, when one of your Monsters falls in your Friendly Lane, the Monster behind it gains +1 armor.
Tier 3: Twin FatesYour Fated and Fortunate mods are always active.

Twin Fates is the line that changes this plate. On its own, Fated Legacy is a comeback mod that only works while the dice are running against you. With Twin Fates beside it, Legacy works from the first battle to the last, whatever the Luck score says. Twin Fates only ever appears next to a Fated or Fortunate mod, so it is never a dead line.

It matters more here because Legacy has no always-on Tier 3 version. Quartermaster, Honed Edge and the other always-on Tier 3 mods each copy a Tier 2 pair without the condition, but nothing does that for Legacy. Twin Fates is the only way to have it switched on all match.

What it asks of the Lane. Each loss in your Friendly Lane leaves the next Monster in line with an extra point of armor, and the armor stays and stacks. That rewards a line built to be worn down from the front: cheap Monsters up front, the Monsters you want protected behind them. Ferocity adds a warning. Every Monster in that Lane hits a Taunt target twice as hard, so keep your Taunt tanks for the other two Lanes and make your opponent's Taunt Monsters the ones that suffer here.

Close Range, Warded Arrival, Fated Aegis

LineWhat it says
Rules Mod: Close RangeAll units can use ranged attacks from the first position.
Tier 2: Warded ArrivalMonsters you place in your Friendly Lane arrive with +1 armor.
Tier 3: Fated AegisWhile your Luck is below your enemy's, Monsters you place in your Friendly Lane arrive with Divine Shield.

Fated Aegis is a comeback mod with a long memory. The condition only matters at the moment you place a Monster. A Monster that arrives while your Luck is behind keeps its Divine Shield after the Luck swings back, until the first hit it takes. When the dice run against you, every new Monster you place in that Lane arrives with a free hit absorbed. Divine Shield ignores all damage once, magic included.

What it asks of the Lane. Close Range lets ranged Monsters attack from the front, so a ranged Monster can lead that Lane without wasting its turns. Warded Arrival gives every placement an extra point of armor. Fated Aegis can add a shield on top while you are behind. A ranged front-liner arriving with armor and a shield takes two layers of punishment before its health moves.

Holy Protection, Fated Surge, Patron's Gift

LineWhat it says
Rules Mod: Holy ProtectionAll units have Divine Shield: the first damage each one takes is ignored.
Tier 2: Fated SurgeWhile your Luck is below your enemy's, your Friendly Lane gains +3 Mana each round instead of +2.
Tier 3: Patron's GiftYour Friendly Lane Archon's Mana cost is refunded.

Patron's Gift makes your Friendly Lane Archon free. Each Lane's Mana pool starts at 12, and the Archon you lead it with is paid out of that pool. A 7-Mana Archon normally leaves only 5 Mana in the pool for your first placements. With Patron's Gift the 7 comes straight back, and the pool stays at 12.

So pick your Archons the other way round. The Friendly Lane Archon is the first one both players choose, blind, and revealed together. With this Talisman equipped, that first pick should be your most expensive Archon, because its buffs come at no Mana cost. Your cheaper Archons go to the Lanes where you still pay for them.

What it asks of the Lane. Holy Protection gives every Monster on both sides a Divine Shield, so every Monster takes an extra hit to kill and fights in that Lane run long. Long fights spend Mana. This Talisman starts the Lane with a full pool, and while you are behind on Luck, Fated Surge adds one more Mana every round.

Finding one, and getting one

The first two of these Talismans were listed on the Talisman Market on the day this was written. The third is Engraved in a player's collection. Every player's Gallery is public by username, so you can browse what is out there.

To get your own:

  • Win it. Every ticketed win in Ranked, a stakes room or the Sealed and Draft queues rolls for a prize, and sometimes the prize is a Talisman. A foil-heavy Deck lifts the odds that it lands at Tier 2 or 3. Each Black Foil or Black Arcane card adds 2%, and each Gold Foil or Gold Arcane card adds 1%, counted over all 53 cards.
  • Open it. Every Real Sealed Bundle comes with a Tier 2 or higher Talisman to keep, already Engraved.
  • Buy it. Listings on the Market start at 20 DEC. A listed Talisman is out of play until it sells or its owner takes it down.

Then equip it in the Deck Builder and build the Friendly Lane its plate asks for. The Talismans guide covers how to read any plate, and the full Splinterlanes rules cover the Lanes, Archons and Mana in detail.
