Hello everyone, Lester here! Do you like Balut? Or have you ever tried eating Balut? Balut is a fertilized duck egg and considered one of the street foods here in the Philippines. And I really love it. Usually, Balut are placed in a nipa basket and displayed on the streets. And you can locate it on almost every corner of the street in Manila around 5PM local time and onwards. On other locations, the vendors travel around each barangay and villages to sell Balut.
For this post, I bought a few raw Balut eggs on my home back from Bulacan. Along Plaridel Bypass Road, Jillian's Pasalubong Center is located and one of the merchandise is raw and cooked Balut. A piece of raw balut costs 8 Php while a cooked balut costs 18 Php. That's a huge difference. No wonder why many sells this food. I bought 10 raw baluts and was told that these eggs are around 10 days old. It means that the chick inside already have feathers. And not many like eating Balut with hairy duck chick.
After I got home, I washed it and cooked the Balut in boiling water for 30 minutes. According to the seller, this is the right amount of time needed to cook this.
While waiting for the Balut to be cooked. I prepared my sawsawan. I mixed vinegar, fish sauce and chili flakes. Sometimes, I would add ground pepper and/or use fresh chili pepper or labuyo.
After 30 minutes, my Balut is ready. One of the best way to eat this is to first slurp the watery juice inside the Balut. Then add a pinch of salt and eat it in one go.
I ate, 3 pieces of Balut soaked in my sawsawan. Balut is a good source of protein and others said that this is an aphrodisiac. For me, I usually eat this when my blood pressure is quite low than normal. Others will cook it using Adobo recipe and others like Sizzling Balut.
