Tackling the ‘broken windows’ syndrome in my home

First small steps

Greetings, friends at Home Solutions, have a lovely day 🤗 I hope peace and happiness reign in your homes. Things are fine here at mine, but I’m crying out for help. Following last month’s earthquake in Venezuela, my grandmother’s little house—where I live—showed signs of cracks and shifting walls that weren’t there before. Although the quake was felt strongly here, thank God it wasn’t as bad as in the states of La Guaira and the capital.

These cracks in the walls are on top of other issues I’ve been meaning to sort out for ages, but I won’t be changing my order of priorities – this time I’m tackling the windows. To give you some background: I grew up in my grandmother’s house and left when I was 15, once my mum had bought her own home. We’ve always helped my grandmother with her house because she was a very hard worker and liked to keep her home in good condition. Once she got older, some of her children came to live with her and ended up ruining her house. Although my mum used to come round regularly to help my grandmother with her personal affairs and would offer her opinion respectfully on the state of the house, they paid no attention to her.

Since we’ve been back, we’ve been sorting out the problems as best we can. The broken windows are something that’s really getting me down, and I can’t put it off any longer – firstly because it gives the impression of a derelict house. Even though they’re an old-style design typical of historic houses, if they’re broken, they give off a depressing vibe; that’s how I feel when I look at them, as I spent many years cleaning these windows whilst I was growing up. This reminded me of the ‘broken windows’ social experiment, which concludes that if something is broken—whether in a neighbourhood or a housing estate—it will always give the impression of neglect, which in turn leads to violence and deterioration within society.

Another reason I need to sort this out as soon as possible is that ever since I adopted a cat, the garden and green spaces have been constantly full of cats. My cat is very sociable 😒😏 and at night they squeeze through the windows to sleep on the sofa and mark the whole living room with urine. Can you imagine the smell in the living room first thing in the morning 😭? It’s no use closing the windows – they squeeze through the gaps, so I have to plug these holes with cardboard every night 😠😡.

I’ve been trying to find out where to get them, but many glass and window shops in my town have closed down, and the glass for these windows isn’t available anymore. When I find the right place, I’ll buy them and, God willing, in a future post I’ll show you the installation and the new windows in my home. Thanks for reading – see you in the comments.
