Today I want to talk about a topic that affects all of us, whether we like it or not: smartphone use. There’s no denying that these devices have become essential for surviving our daily routine. We depend on the screen for almost everything. It makes life easier in a thousand ways: we work with it, stay in touch with family members who are far away, check the time, and we even need it for the simplest shopping trip.

Villa de Cura, #Venezuela , things are so direct that in almost every corner shop or business, people expect you to pay via mobile transfer (pago móvil). If you run out of mobile data, battery, or signal, it becomes hard to even buy a loaf of bread or pay for a bus ride. In that sense, technology gives us a huge hand and speeds up processes that used to take hours at a bank.

However, like everything in life, the phone is a double-edged sword. Without realizing it, that screen slowly steals the best minutes and hours of our day. We get so glued to checking notifications, social media, or any distraction that we completely disconnect from the real world and what is happening right in front of us.

alt

Regrettably, this lack of attention doesn't just take away quality time with our families; it can also cost us our lives. Right on the avenue near my house, a tragedy happened that still gives me goosebumps: last year, a young girl was hit by a car while crossing the street because she was completely distracted by her phone. She didn't look both ways because her eyes were glued to the screen; a car couldn't brake in time, and she passed away right on the spot. A young life was lost in a second just for not looking up in time.

alt

That event left a deep mark on everyone in our neighborhood and serves as a constant reminder that a second of carelessness can never be taken back.

alt

Here is a short reflective video about how technology can isolate us and why we need to learn to disconnect for a while:

My Personal Opinion / Mi opinión personal

In my view, the secret lies in setting boundaries. It's not about becoming enemies with technology or throwing our phones away, because we genuinely need them to work and handle daily payments. The key is to use the phone as the tool it is, but never let the phone use us.

alt

alt

When we go out into the street, when we cross an avenue, or when we sit at the table with our loved ones, let's put the device in our pocket. Real life is happening outside the screen, and it is not worth risking it or missing out on it just to reply to a message that can easily wait a few minutes.

alt

alt

Take good care of yourselves on the street, stay safe, and remember to look up. Big hugs to everyone! I’d love to hear in the comments: how do you manage phone use in your daily routine?

alt
