This is the first summer my predatory bird house has been outside, not sure if any more birds are going to make homes in it for the year. Though we did have some Wrens move into it during the early Spring. Since then nothing has taken to it, and now we are outside of Kestrel mating season I will probably not attract any of them this year.
Maybe next spring I will get them to move in, I am not in a big rush as the fruit trees have not bared any yield yet. But in the next few years I will probably have some fruits forming, and it would be nice to have a resident predatory bird on site near the trees to deter the birds that feed on the Cherries and Blueberries.
If I do not get any Kestrel action in the next year or so I plan on building a Hawk platform to attract them instead. Both should be a good deterrent for birds that feed on my trees. Maybe an Owl will move into the Kestrel house, from what I have read they can move into these homes as well.
Around the 2:40 mark in this video a Cicada bug flew overhead and almost got eaten by a bird. You can see it happen while I watch from the Raspberry support structure I attached the house to. I heard it before I saw it and was lucky to be looking in the right direction. And even more lucky to catch it on camera. Those bugs get real big so if the bird did indeed catch it, then it will probably turn out to be a tasty meal. I see giant wasps go after Cicadas as well, many things eat them around here. Not sure what kind of bird that was but it was moving quick. Must have saw it and dived in for the insect kill.
As for the Kestrel house I will keep an eye on it and see if any other birds move in. I may open it in the winter to clean it out but for right now ill just leave it alone and see if it gets any more action.
