Once I got my baskets prepared by adding an assortment of rocks, sand, perlite and some other non-moisture retaining media the cacti were ready to be planted.

I have four baskets to fill up, Ill be planting just a few in this video and then adding more over time seeing how they fare. We get alot of rain, and freezing winters. So these cacti and succulents I picked are cold hardy. But hard to say how they will do with the rains here. That is why I went out of my way to make a custom soil mix and to add rocks at the bottom of the baskets. Hoping with this the cacti will not rot.

I had the cacti in temporary containers as they did not all arrive at the same time. So once I had them all I went about adding them to the baskets. I use leather gloves though I still found ways to get poked by the spiny cacti. It was not too bad, but had to use tweezers on a few hair sized spines... those are the worst.

The baskets have coconut husk that holds everything inside the metal basket. I have not used this material for baskets so its new to me. Looking forward to seeing how it is in a few years. I may need to replace the husk every few years.. haha that is going to be interesting. If the cacti and succulents survived by then, they will hopefully have growth and maybe I can break them up into new plants.

But for right now I just need to see how they adapt and get used to the wet weather. I have added a surface layer of perlite since making this video. Hoping it will keep everything dry. I had alot of perlite mixed into my cacti soil media but decided to add more later.

I noticed alot of perlite was added in the shipping soil that the plants came with. And many had roots but no pot, so I had to put them in a bunch of containers to await planting. A few pieces broke off while handling and I placed them in their own little containers hoping they will form as well. Its been a few months but no progress on those little cuttings yet. In the next video I post regarding this will be about the pieces that fell off and how I planted them.
