Since moving the two plants apart, they are starting to bush out more. I think they indeed needed more space. Looking forward to early spring when they tend to flower. The Bees love this early blooming plant as its one of the few that flowers so early on in the season. My mason bees need plants like that as they come out late February to early March.
I moved them last year and it caused one of them not to flower, the other one still did but the birds beat me to the berries. I had a chance to make jam from these berries a few years back 
One year I collected the ripe berries and mashed them through a wire screen. Then cooled out the water and had a nice little container of jam. They taste like cranberries and the jam is a dark red color. I hope I get more next year as it was quite the treat to enjoy. I put some on toast and goes good for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Collecting the berries you must be careful, as the plant has sharp leaves. Its like the hollies in that way that the leaves are sharp and can poke you if not careful. This plant would probably make a decent security barrier as its quite uncomfortable to try to climb through.
It will keep its leaves through the winter as its an evergreen plant, which is another great quality to it. The plant can reach over 6 feet tall, though mine are not that big yet. One of them is close to 6 feet but the other is much shorter around 3-4 feet tall. So these plants could make good privacy shrubs with its height and not loosing its leaves in the winter. I have not pruned mine but I would think its something thats kind of a pain in the ass. I plan on just letting them grow and seeing how big they get. If it gets too big then I will trim it but otherwise I will let them keep growing.
