Using a hand sledge and a steel plate I broke up large rocks I did not want anymore. Using them as a drainage layer for baskets I have.
I went to my local hardware store and was suprised to find little to no selection of small porous rocks.
So I had to make my own. Using rocks I've collected over the years I picked a few big ones I did not really care for anymore and broke them up with some tools.
Sincr all I had were big stones I broke them up into smaller ones. And had three sizes. The smallest would go through the sieve and get added into the cacti soil. The medium sized rocks were used for the bottom of the planters. The big chunks I used for another project.
Using a bag of red lava rocks I broke them up into smaller pieces to use in the soil and drainage layer.
Once it was added it looked alot like the red georgia clay. But its fragments of lava rock instead.
It was alot of work breaking up those rocks. Hoping the cactus prefer these rocks more. From what I've read any that absorbs moisture helps to regulate the water in the soil minimizing rot. Glad I was able to make a sieve to keep the big stones out. Really happy how it came out in the end, time will tell if the plants I use them with feel the same.
