¿A quién engaño?

The clouds are gray and misshapen, but I imagine them red and heart-shaped. It will rain, I know, and yet the sun will radiate for me like the summer that no longer exists. I imagine the smell of burnt mountains and savor the sweet acidity of the lemon ice cream sitting in my car that, luckily, has broken down in the middle of the desert. Come to think of it, my glasses are drawing the attention of the vultures, perhaps because I dazzled them by looking up over the horizon. I'm sweaty even though I'm cold, it's raining even though it's hot. Reality and my reality constantly battle to dominate my brain: pixels invade the distorting panorama. I already chose a winner!

My face is red: I realize this when I take a self-portrait in a selfie; I'm not as pretty as she is and that satisfies me. When we robbed the Bank of England together I saw her with a tomato face; the submachine gun knocked her to the ground in the escape attempt, which was unluckily successful. We ran home and ate marshmallows for the rest of the night, and with the stolen money we built a house for the dog that ended up washing away in the rain.

Will there still be time to smoke some tobacco?

When we were children we drew suns on the ground to scare away the rain; Pool days were very difficult because you had to break your back doing housework. She would blush every time we secretly exchanged sugar for salt in an attempt to get revenge against Mr. Héctor, our adoptive father, of whom we had the theory that the old paunchy man was actually a UFO from Pluto. We were with him until the army discovered him planting hallucinogenic herbs; from there we knew that the paunch was a real terrestrial.

In this desert there is more chance of contact between worlds, only I am too foolish to be considered for the experiments of an alien race. Perhaps they took her away and that is why she is not with me... she brings with her the rain and the storm, however she tried to imagine the eternal summer that disappeared with her departure. The only thing I remember about her is her blood painting her cheeks from the inside; pink and red as the blush of the muses.

The smell of tobacco warms me even though there is a hectic imaginary sun. Pretending is fun; one gets the idea in the assumption of non-existence. My glasses are fogged up from the cold and she's not around to clean them. Her return is as possible as the rains in the desert… did I already tell you that she was in one? And it rains fake even if it's real! Arrebol, that's what it was called and it was for obvious reasons. The nuns at the boarding school once confessed to us that she was such a red baby that she lit up the dark bedrooms. Perhaps it was the explanation to the blood that she never stopped boiling inside her, and that it burned her.

Another time we were kidnapping the prince of England when suddenly she felt an itch. We had to stop the kidnapping because he convulsed in the middle of a shootout with the police. The redness in her flesh distilled a light that, unfortunately, blinded the authority and allowed us to escape the fate of jail. After that dangerous situation, she was never the same again: at night she hummed something I don't remember about the sunset and the apocalypse, and then she screamed hopelessly until she died of laughter. I even saw her floating in bed, with white pupils, speaking in abstract languages.

What happened to you Arrebol?

She faded from her flushed color and became as pale as the color of dry bones. I kept an eye on her, of course, I even sang to her every time she hallucinated. I threatened hundreds of doctors with death to give me some hope but they all told me that she could only be understood in mental hospitals. Next to her, clinging to the body that did not respond, I was crying like a true madman. One day she simply disappeared forever, leaving me with a pale trail that locked me in depression and gave rise to my addiction to tobacco.

what happened to me?

It was very difficult for me to understand that Arrebol had disappeared from my life for a reason that was beyond my understanding. Looking for recommendations on Google I found that, according to the legends of the believers, one gets their loved ones at sunset. By good luck my car breaks down right in the middle of the lonely desert where the sunsets blush and smile even though there is rain. My tobacco is almost extinct although it is still too early to go home. It's still cold but I'm very hot, there's even time to enjoy the lemon ice cream that she liked so much even when her teeth hurt.

Arrebol is fucking happy: that's what I know. I am the one who suffers and tries to be happy when there are no reasons to be. Who was she kidding? Only to that lonely reality that I don't want in my life. Summer is no more, I know, but as long as I live it will continue to exist. I will calmly await the return of my little girl: the blushing woman who lit up in the dark. It is difficult to fight against those pixels that color realism and not lies. I know you don't live on lies, but with them at least you can survive.

I draw some suns on the earth as we used to do as children, and in the middle of the round figures I draw her to see if she also appears. Who knows? Maybe she'll come back at sunset that reminds me so much of her flushed cheeks. If she does, I'll tell her to trade sugar for salt in the Arabian dictator's kitchen, just like we did in the old days! Meanwhile my car will continue to break down for good luck in the desert and my tobacco will light even if the storm doesn't let my lighter work. It is a pleasant distraction from a memory that is capable of devouring reality itself.
