I'm returning to design after a while, dedicating time to practice and seeking ways to enhance my skills for further professionalization. This time, I created a photomontage featuring the concept of a giant squid with its tentacles and the ocean. A combination of exposures and layer masks played a crucial role in bringing the final design to life. I invite you to take a look at the process!
DESIGN
Comencé generando dos imágenes primordiales: un calamar y un fondo oceánico con un paisaje que muestra el mar desde arriba y el lecho marino. Luego, empecé a recortar los bordes del calamar para ubicarlo de manera adecuada, ya que la imagen de fondo presenta una superficie muy cercana, como si estuviéramos en marea baja.
I started by generating two foundational images: a squid and an underwater background with a panorama showcasing the sea from above and the ocean floor. Next, I began to carefully crop the edges of the squid to place it in a suitable position, considering that the background image depicts a closely positioned surface, reminiscent of low tide.
Una vez lograda su ubicación, procedí a perfeccionar los bordes que quedaron con marcas del recorte. Para el fondo, utilicé la capa de exposición, que me permitió oscurecer la imagen casi en su totalidad para poder cubrir el piso del mar. También añadí sombras adicionales para lograr un fondo más oscuro y realista.
Once its placement was achieved, I proceeded to refine the edges that had marks from the cropping. For the background, I utilized the exposure layer, allowing me to darken the image almost entirely to cover the seafloor. I also added additional shadows to create a darker and more realistic underwater backdrop.
Para lograr que el calamar parezca atravesar el agua y obtener un efecto más realista, utilicé la máscara de capa y la tonalidad negra para borrar el calamar de manera controlada. Esto permitió crear un diseño limpio con el efecto deseado. En ambas imágenes se muestra la diferencia: la primera sin el borrado y la segunda con el calamar borrado, logrando así el efecto de inmersión más realista.
To make the squid appear to pass through the water and achieve a more realistic effect, I used the layer mask and black tones to erase the squid selectively. This allowed for creating a clean design with the desired effect. The difference is evident in both images, with the first one showing the squid without erasure and the second one presenting the squid with the erased portions, resulting in a more authentic immersion effect.
LETTERS
Incorporé un efecto de neón para el ojo del calamar, creando así un punto focal llamativo. Esta adición resalta visualmente el ojo, haciéndolo destacar como un elemento central de atención en el diseño general.
I applied a neon effect to the squid's eye, making it a focal point of attention. This addition visually enhances the eye, making it stand out as a central element in the overall design.
Para el título, me enfoqué en dispersar la palabra "DEAD" entre los tentáculos del calamar y en el fondo del mar. Elegí una fuente específica y utilicé la herramienta de desenfoque (dedo) para darle un efecto de arrastre. Luego, reduje la opacidad para suavizar el blanco y evitar que sea demasiado llamativo, permitiendo que la atención se centre de manera equilibrada. Las mismas técnicas se aplicaron con un borrado de capa para crear la ilusión de que las letras están siendo atrapadas.
For the title, I focused on dispersing the word "DEAD" among the squid's tentacles and in the seabed. I chose a specific font and used the smudge tool to create a dragging effect. Afterwards, I lowered the opacity to soften the white and prevent it from being too stark, ensuring a balanced focus. Similar techniques were applied with layer erasure to give the illusion that the letters are being captured.
Para concluir el diseño y lograr una composición completa, añadí un barco en el fondo con ajustes de luces, teniendo en cuenta la presencia del sol. Jugué con las sombras para crear la ilusión de algo amenazante que se acerca, personificando la muerte. Utilicé una capa de ajuste para corregir imperfecciones, aplicando desenfoque en algunas zonas para evitar la pixelación y cubrir áreas que requerían más ajustes. To conclude the design and achieve a complete composition, I added a boat in the background with light adjustments, taking into account the presence of the sun. I played with shadows to create the illusion of something menacing approaching, personifying death. I used an adjustment layer to address imperfections, applying blurring in certain areas to avoid pixelation and cover parts that required more refinement.
