I thought I found King Boletes for this #fungifriday

These look quite a bit like Boletus edulis from the top cap color. Quite a few nice specimens were growing in a hardwood forest.

But once I picked one and looked at the stem I realized it was a different bolete species.

The common name is Bay Bolete with a Latin name of Imleria badia.

My daughter had fun seeing me do a taste test nibble of one to see if it was a bitter bolete. Thankfully it tasted great and didn't taste like rotten fish mixed with moldy walnut.

Quite a few already had been scavenged by ravenous slugs.

These craters are all from slugs chewing on them.

Another way to test for Bay Boletes is to pinch a piece off and see if the porous gills or cap flesh bruises a dark blue or dark gray color. If it doesn't start staining a color then you have a nice edible Bay Bolete. Sadly I couldn't take these home to cook because they spray week killer around here and mushrooms tend to absorb roundup and other fertilizer toxins. Later I'll go to a more remote forest area to see if they are growing. These are a good find as they taste just like Boletus edulis aka King Boletes or porcinis.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
