The rains brought out one of the largest mushrooms in the world for this #fungifriday
This thing is as big as a soccer ball. The Latin name is Calvatia gigantea.
I prefer them around baseball to softball size because their texture isn't too foamy at this size.
Here is one that is just a bit bigger than a softball. At this point they get foamy in texture but are still edible.
Here is a softball size one. I like to peel off the outer skin then cut them in slices and pan fry them in olive oil. If you melt cheese and marinara on them they make a kind of nice mushroom crust pizza.
Here is a basketball size one that is bursting beyond its skin. At this size I usually just dehydrate them and turn them into powder to add to soups.
My daughter and one of her friends had a blast harvesting these huge mushrooms.
