Greetings and happy day, beautiful community Feathered Friends. I have previously shared three posts here related to savannah canaries (Sicalis columbiana), and today I am back to bring other moments of this beautiful bird. Below you can read my two previous posts:

Saludos y feliz día, hermosa comunidad Feathered Friends.

Even though there is plenty of food for birds on my property—thanks to the insects, fruits, and flowers found there—I sometimes feel that giving them a little extra help doesn’t hurt. My husband feels the same way, which is why, for the past two months or so, we have been feeding them a variety of seeds every day. Sometimes my husband buys canary seed, but, to be honest, the canaries don’t seem to care for it much. At other times, we offer them rice, some sorghum, and even food scraps. We have noticed, however, that the canaries have a particular fondness for raw, uncooked rice; so, mid-morning, we usually scatter a few handfuls for them to eat—and not just for them, but for other birds as well, such as small doves and tropical mockingbirds, which are also quite common around our home.

I’m usually the one who takes care of this task, since he’s busy at that time of day. It’s truly endearing—and amusing—to watch the canaries waiting on the branches of the guava and lime trees that line the path leading to the back of the property (the area you can see in the photos). Usually, two or three of them perch on the lower branches, staring intently toward my house—specifically toward the laundry area—and the moment they spot me coming with the bag of rice, they start chirping and fluttering about, as if to alert the rest of the flock that food is on the way. It’s a lovely sight to behold.

These birds can be very sociable and bold, but I have taught them not to get too close to me; I usually walk in this area accompanied by dogs or cats, and if any animal approaches me, it is highly likely to be attacked by my pets. Therefore, I toss handfuls of rice with some force, so that the grains scatter and become available for these and other beautiful little birds.

After I scatter the rice on the ground, first one canary comes down, then two, then three; eventually, realizing they are in no danger, they all descend in a flock. I have counted as many as 35 birds eating at the same time, and it is truly a delight to watch them. In the photos, you can see about a dozen, but that is because I was still close to the feeding area, and I suspect the shyer ones didn’t dare to come down.

Here I end my post today, in which I have shared with you images of some beautiful, simple birds—canaries—that have found a place on my property where they can live in peace. I say goodbye wishing you much joy and health, and remember: Not all days are the same and more importantly: Everything you do, everything you give, will inexorably return to you. Hugs!

¡Abrazos!
