This isn't a call to action. It's an inquiry. I heard about a coal miner's strike in Alabama and it got me to thinking about things like community outreach and branding.
This is really one of the most generous communities I've ever been a part of. There's a very low tolerance for bullshit here but if you aren't trying to take advantage or get over on anyone I've found most people to be very kind and trusting.
Getting back to the strike, when the lady reporting spoke about collecting donations to supplement miners' pay with a food bank and and another funding to cover bills, and even setting up the standard toy fund for Christmas, I thought about how Hive could benefit that effort and how said effort could benefit Hive.
So, I thought about the DHF. What if we proposed funding for a donation? I don't know how big it would have to be to garner significant attention, but there are 1100 people out there that could supplement their income by telling their story here. There are also all the people those workers are connected to.
That seems like a good chunk of people to onboard.
It also feels a lot like what Hive is made for. Empowering communities. Maybe we could donate a Coal Miner's Tribe to their cause? But I digress...
This isn't about this particular strike or those particular strikers. This is about creating a symbiotic relationship with communities in general.
I honestly don't know if coal miners in Alabama are a demographic that would adapt well here, so I'd like to broaden the possibilities.
There are a lot of people struggling right now. Many of the communities set up to support those people could benefit greatly from the tools we have here, and it benefits us because success breeds success and when organizations start showing up they bring individuals with them, indefinitely.
I asked @taskmaster4450 about it on Twitter, but considering I posed a direct and uninspired question I wasn't dishearten too terribly, when is answer was equally direct and uninspired. So, I came here to flesh it out a bit. A tip of the hat to you, sir, for the nudge.
Moving on, what about churches? I, personally, despise religion as a concept, but understand the role it plays.
Branding is an adhesive that holds civilization together. We need to know the institutions we can trust. Be it the laundry detergent we use, the car we buy, the food we eat, branding is the church of capitalism, so it seems like churches could do well here.
I know we want to appeal to business, and need that to bring in capital, but wouldn't any organization benefit from being here, and wouldn't we benefit from them?
I'd really like to hear thoughts from the community on this, all communities really but I don't know if it would be appropriate to tag some of them.
