A writer I follow recommends freewriting.
Her name is Angela Booth, and she writes fiction, nonfiction, and copywriting. These are three seemingly different areas of writing with much in comment.
Whether she writes one or the other, she starts out by freewriting, she says.
She said that it might seem like a waste of time to spend fifteen minutes freewriting first, before attacking a task. But in her experience, she saved a lot of time while doing the task.
If she didn't freewrite first, the task would take much more than fifteen minutes longer to perform.
She's written daily for many years, so she should know.
Still, I cannot get into the habit of freewriting. I go right to the writing task at hand.
... Or perhaps I don't.
Now that I think about it, I always turn ideas around in my head before I sit down to write. So perhaps I'm doing my freewriting mentally?
What do you think? Do you freewrite? Or just consider what you're going to write and then sit down to write it?
