The French ship, Le Griffon, disappeared without a trace in the Great Lakes of Michigan, USA, in September 1679. The ship was last seen on its way to the Niagara Falls with an expensive cargo of fur and goods for trade. The ship was owned by the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

300th Anniversary of the Griffon
I have several coins with the bust of Elizabeth II at the age of 37 years. It is not a secret that I like this rendition of Elizabeth II by designer Arnald Machin.
I do not know much about Canada, so I asked CoPilotwhy a French ship is significant to Canada, that they would celebrate the 300th anniversary of the ship Le Griffon.
This was the reply I got: The French ship Le Griffon holds a legendary place in Canadian and North American history because it was the first European vessel to sail the Great Lakes. Its voyage marked a pivotal moment in the exploration and eventual colonization of the interior of North America. Canada commemorated the 300th anniversary of Le Griffon in 1979 with a special silver dollar coin because the ship symbolized the beginning of European maritime presence and trade in the Great Lakes region, which would become vital to the development of Canada’s economy and settlement patterns. Although Le Griffon mysteriously vanished on its return voyage—becoming one of the Great Lakes’ earliest maritime mysteries—its legacy endured. The coin’s reverse features the ship in full sail, a tribute to its bold journey and the spirit of exploration it represents.
